Description of campaign/project

"What does it means to protest against the suffering
than simply take note of it?"
[Susan Sontag, “Regarding the Pain of others”, 2003]

There is a language that approaches. And there is a language that send away.
It is trust. And affection. "In" himself and "to" and "from" another and another and ... and ... and ...
Confidence in the " POWER of language", the link between signifier and signified, which allows human beings to communicate in relationships with others and the environment, has its origins in the experience of contact with the mother's body in early life when he is completely dependent on his presence and the meaning and the weight of 'authority' is established in memory of the first moves of the infant. But «what happens when the relation is broken, when the access to language is separated from the body and from affection, reduced to mere inter-operability between mechanic segments of an-emotional exchange? I say that language is in this way made precarious, frail, unable to grasp the emotional meaning of words. Actually the generation that is now entering the social sphere seems psychologically frail and scarcely fit to link emotion and verbal exchange. The huge multiplication of tools for communication, the digital saturation of the info-sphere, has dramatically reduced the spaces and the times of bodily interaction between persons» [Franco Berardi Bifo].

Bordernetart_www.delfine.it is an artistic and technological research project realized with a group of adolescent female immersed in a "high security" neuro psychiatric structure, located in Hall 5 of the former psychiatric hospital Paolo Pini, of Affori (Milano) [Azienda Ospedaliera Ospedale Niguarda Ca’ Granda]. The therapeutic community “I Delfini” «accepts up to eight female adolescents aged between 13 and 17 years, presenting a severe psychiatric disorder of various types: adolescent psychosis, personality disorder, eating disorders». [Dr. Patrizia Conti]

Focus on the history of madness, now categorized between mental and organic disorders, and investigate how it is constituted as a phenomenon in a given culture, is fundamental to question the limits and CONFLICTS that culture imposes on itself through the “POWER of language”.
«It is in reference to this sphere of "other” thought, that Western man has enabled the fundamental mechanism of exclusion or discrimination (partage) which must ultimately, the same distinction between sense and nonsense, therefore, between the language of reason, full of meaning and history and the murmur of a shapeless lack of reason, less and less and less of a sense of history». [S. Catucci]
Bordernetart_www.delfine.it is testing the limits of the concept of relationship, between real and virtual (social networks), during the transition from analog to digital dimension.
With Lorena, Lorena, Marzia, Tatiana, Valerie, Alexandra, Sukaina, Sharon, Paula, Hanyeli, Veronica, Carolina, ... the girls for which I founded the “Compagnia Delfine”, I used an intranet (blocked sites for teenagers living in the community, like MySpace, Facebook, Google
video, Youtube, video and music sites, MSN, any tipology of chat denied), and any access to the network was allowed only through the use of the password of an educator. We have faced our structural and material difficulties using "poor" technologies at our disposal and open source software, downloaded from the network. We have protected our privacy, without giving up our right to education, culture, relationship and social participation.

Bordernetart_www.delfine.it is the online “living archive” of the artistic experiences, including analog and digital, that “Compagnia Delfine” made in the four years of “social and intemedia art workshop”, a practical cross the ownership of conscious and affective interdisciplinary different artistic languages, that I coordinate for them since 2007.
The language of the network, here and now, breaks the sense/non sense CONFLICT and becomes an occasion for a self-narrating in constant evolution. It 's a self-relational recounting his discovery of the singular sense of identity through the connection and the dissipation of fragments of LOVE and DESIRE. It 'a process of lovely resistance in which the symbolic “POWER of language” is played to recombine social identities.

To realize Bordernetart_www.delfine.it, since 2007, I coordinate the “social and intemedia art workshop” a practical cross the ownership of conscious and affective interdisciplinary different artistic languages. Each year participants devote to learning activities of the technical means available (mainly low-tech technologies, open source and free ware software, an intranet) and the final goal is the creation of a collective intermedia artwork. Reworking the legacy of fine arts, sculpture and literature, the laboratory implements an overrun of aesthetic languages and methods of traditional art approach, accepting and experimenting with the language of the latest digital technology, from creative writing to hypertext, from painting to photography, from theater to video, from music to the techniques of digital audio post-production, from the real and physical relationship to the virtual network.

Bordernetart_www.delfine.it is the first artworks realized for the Net by a group of petients that lives in a "high security" neuro psychiatric structure, where every contact with the public sphere must be controlled and filtered.
Therefore gives voice to the personal stories of teens who become the authors of a story that
winds from programming to the study of
the software for the construction of the tree
site, the interfaces (open and proprietary) to the
web design, to the analysis of concepts such as relationship, privacy, copyright. It is a diccult artwork
for the limits imposed by the context, a
work on social and ethical implications,
a work that penetrates the mesh
network with the virus infecting the difference
and suffering, an artwork that
becomes a metaphor for communication difficulties
the time of a virtual social.

I leraned that the LOVE that our MOTHERS transfer in our BODY, is the one of the main POWER to break CONFLICT between PRIVATE and PUBLIC SPHERE in the DIGITAL ERA.

Bordernetart is a radical and social project. I very much appreciated this work, as well as with the concept of social and intermedia art as put forward by Giada Totaro. No glitzy flashy web presence, just a solid emancipatory project in which participants create art from scratch, with the help of a mentor. A project in which 8 teenage women undergoing therapy gain access to the world, break free from isolation and discover new realities.

I like this project a lot since it represents a fresque, an archive of the many ways in which teenage girls with severe psychological disorders have tried to interact in analog and digital ways. How they have communicated and let their creativity work on and offline. It is also the testimony of what can be achieved with intermediary technologies in a world dominated by a rich multimedia saturated technology. It's in a way a humble experiment with people who are not the usual suspects. Thereby, I would argue that Bordernetart is a refreshing lesson in aggregated creativity that goes... Beyond. It's a technological and artistic documentation and discussion about madness with those very people who suffer from severe disorders.

I recognize a true willingness to make this project work over a long period of time (at least 4 years), enough for the online presence to form a comprehensive document. Enough also to suggest that individual change is possible through the use of technology and art. Although it is difficult to assess in what ways Bordernetart has managed to effect social change, it is undeniable that art therapy - and similar psycho-social interventions - have certainly not been damageable to those making use of it. I actually think that Bordernetart attempts to help participants redefine their language. Which brings me to a question. I was wondering if the workshops had been useful at all in creating constructive dialogue among the 8 women. Was the project more successful (therapeutic) at an individual level or at a group (collective) level?

One can only admire the (almost) exclusive use of open source technologies in trying to attain the goals of the project. This is to be highlighted, as it is consequent with a larger attempt to use technology and art in an ethical and radical way. I would love to know in what ways though, the use of open source software has changed anything in the creative process and output of Bordernetart. Was it determinant?

I would finish by saying that I would rank the conceptual effort as high. It seems as though the use of technology and art is meant to reconnect the participants to their emotions, to let them experiment and practice a new grammar with which they can express themselves. The technological effort was also very impressive, as was just mentioned with the use of open source software and intermediary technology. As for the "people effort", it is very high. This is a demanding project for all those involved and one can sense that it has been executed with great care and continuous efforts towards the participants. The participants use different tools to express themselves.

If you had to think of ways to make this workshop even more impactful, using mobile technology or other online tools, what would you attempt to use with the participants in the future? What would work well? It seems to be that these questions could help other such social projects to attain their objectives of using technology and art for emancipation purposes. This would make it useful outside of Milano and replicable on a larger scale, if at all possible, thereby widening the social impact even more.

Bordernetart has opened my eyes to the use of radical communication among vulnerable publics. It is a truly inspiring work and I wish the creator good luck with the continuation of the workshops.

Congratulations!

Hi!
First I want to say tank you all for appreciating and for your interesting critic! Tank you from all of us, to Frédéric Dubois and all Memefest crew.
So I want to answer to your questions.

First one: "I was wondering if the workshops had been useful at all in creating constructive dialogue among the 8 women. Was the project more successful (therapeutic) at an individual level or at a group (collective) level?"

I think that “individual” and “collective” level are constantly in relationship and merely they are the same dimension: we can find our best way to understand our self (and the best language for this) just relating our emotions and perceptions through the other (we learn this from the relationship between our body and the body of the mother in the first days of our life, is in that point that everything starts…) So YES! The best result of the project has been giving instruments to evolve these kind of practice (individual-group level relationship) among partecipants. New and intermedia technologies gave us a funny, ironic but also critic and educational way too our purpose. In two words we could say that it is a sort of “social therapy”.

"I would love to know in what ways though, the use of open source software has changed anything in the creative process and output of Bordernetart. Was it determinant?"

Yes. Since 2007 I tried to experiment different interfaces (to make photos, videos and so on…free and not free). But:

- in most of cases, interface design is not compatible to “vulnerable” adolescent’s first approach. What I want to say is that: more interface design is complex and full of tools, much more is the difficulty for the adolescent to understand the inner functioning of the software (and of the language), finding a personal and singular way to approach it; so I had to take care about our purpose to give girls free instruments and not just some templates!
For these reasons I preferred to use much more “simple” software such ad Kompozer or Audacity, etc…and simply trash my cracked Suite Adobe :)

- the use of open source and free ware software has been one of our main message during activities: “is open, you can download and use it…” “wherever you are”, “ you don’t have to pay for this…” , “communication is free”, “you can find your way…”; because often for these girls one “alt” is the economic impossibility to got a tool (digital divide). Every year some girls came to me showing little intermedia works made by them selves at home, at school... These are an important feedback.

- I preferred to live always all the aesthetic “mistakes” visible in every work, just to narrate our difficulties in approaching the different interfaces: I think that open source world might evolve its target experimenting in such hybrid social context, finding new and revolutionary aesthetic and design solutions.

"If you had to think of ways to make this workshop even more impactful, using mobile technology or other online tools, what would you attempt to use with the participants in the future? What would work well?"

Time and space during these kind of activities is built respecting every individual attitudes and emotions and economic status. When a technology is introduced in a certain ecosystem, this action produces a lot of effects, or none. In our case we started with video-theatre in 2007 and we came to internet in 2010. We have always to take care about the respect of identity privacy, moving from an hyper-local and private dimension (the girls) to an hyper-global reception (the world wide web), so introducing connective and telematic tools is, in more case, simply FORBIDDEN. Often we answered to our structural boundaries through aesthetic solutions and tricks, then we find, little by little, to envelop the project with more tools.
For 2011 we are going to realize a Delfine blog with Wordpress!!
Our goal is a social and active communication campaign (for the web) realized by Compagnia Delfine. Of course, every year, we would like to “open” this social web platform to other partecipants (such schools, other communities, …) and find collaborative ways to approach our common goal: let adolescents talk about their emotions and social problematic recombinating languages, identities and roles.
To promote and facilitate the use of this blog between the girls, I will start using this wordpress tool:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/text-messaging/

I verified that even if not every girl has a personal computer, all of them have a personal mobile phone! I will activate the phone number of every girls mobile, with the Text Messaging service of Wordpress. Girls will receive notifications via SMS text when various changes happen on their blog and they will receive and moderate comments, create posts and more via text.
With this platform we will have a collective blog, every girl we’ll learn to use it even after their living in the community, and even if she has any pc, creating links between their experiences, even far away from that space and time.

"This would make it useful outside of Milano and replicable on a larger scale, if at all possible, thereby widening the social impact even more."

Yes! That’s it!! This project is born with the aim to think about the Digital Net as a social resource to connect people who are living at the “borderline” of our society and of our Net (bordernetart): therapeutic communities, penitentiary, mental hospital, connected with schools, art academies, museums, families, and so on…Recombinant social practices through new technolgies are really fertile ways to evolve society in something new, as Foucault would say, going over our limited ability to approach the real and unreal (and so the virtual) through the language, leading communication to a common right and a common evolution.

Tank U all Memefest see you soon!!
