visual communication practice
Description of idea
Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the
festival outlines:
Debt is both beautiful and dangerous. The beauty lies in the surface, the possession of material belongings. The danger is found in the reality of dealing with being in any kind of debt from this need of material belongings.
A location where the danger of debt is forgotten most is in the shopping centres. With material objects surrounding us, we see nothing but the pretty, shiny objects that tempt us. We forget about living within our income and splurge. We can call it “retail therapy” or any other name but in reality it is an obsession with consumption to the point where we don’t limit ourselves to objects that we need.
My representation of debt shows the glistening beauty of debts material surface but also the danger of our obsession with these material objects. If touched, the objects I have created would wound, puncture and damage those near it. If placed into a shopping centre, the objects would create a lingering sense of unease in a place where more caution is needed. Perhaps enabling individuals to question their purchased and think further about their choices.
The words ‘comfort’ and ‘stability’ are used because this is how these material objects make us feel. The texture and finish of the words pull the viewer back to reality, showing that our obsession with consumption does not lead to comfort or stability at all.
What kind of communication approach do you use?
3D installations that are slightly sculptural
What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of
your communication?
A sense of discomfort in the act consuming beyond need.
What did you personally learn from creating your submitted
work?
I learnt that in modern society people tend not to think twice about the money spent on material objects. My aim is therefore to inspire this thought so that perhaps people will make better decisions with their money, keeping them away from unnecessary debts.
Why is your work, GOOD communication
WORK?
My work communicates on 2 different levels. The words represented are a more literal means of communication, they influence thought and questioning of the idea of debt. The physical presence of the work if it were placed into a public space would create a sense of unease that the words alone could not.
Where and how do you intent do implement your
work?
The idea is for the work to be placed into a public space, somewhere where goods are consumed on an obsessive level such as an indoor or outdoor shopping facility. The work would act as a 3D installation/ sculpture, made from both metal and glass to achieve the truth in the danger of the object.
Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe
the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change
other media with your work-
how?)
