Debt designers responsibility

Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

I wanted to focus on something more personal, and I believe as designers we are responsible for what we make. The best designers are the ones who think differently and find new ways of solving problems. We live in a world where we always want more. Adverts and new products tells us that we have to purchase these things to become happy, successful and likeable. To fund these purchases customers take out loans, which in many cases they are not able to pay off, leading them to staying in debt. We as designers create these desires, we all have a part to play. I created a poster (b&w for the environment) and a infographic inspired website which will contribute to the solution and help raise awareness of this issue.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I want it to be interactive in a way that people will reblog and reread it to others. That more designers will be aware of the problem. That I am not the only one talking about it, but letting others spread the word.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

I think it will benefit designers because they will think about what kind of work they are doing. However, this will benefit the general public. I know it is a big step, but it has to start somewhere. We can't solve all the problems, but starting by just rethinking a little bit everyday, might change the way we see things.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

It was a fun project where I got to look at something from a design perspective. I know that when I'm finished at school there are a lot of design jobs which wont allow me to explore and create what I want to. I think this poster/website is good to look back on. That I will never loose my creativity, but make something different and interactive.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

I believe I looked at the problem differently by choosing to go for artists as the target audience. All designers and artists can learn from the poster. Hopefully it will give new ideas and meaning to others, make them think differently.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

The poster will be put up at places where creative people are, like schools, shops, cafes, museums and art institutes. Designers and artist are a lot on the web lately, sharing their art work via design blogs and social networking. I believe this is a opportunity to show my work. Having creative people reblogging and posting the poster and having a think about the problem.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

I am not very well know in the social networking world, and wish I was. I believe that this is a great way to reach out to so many designers and artist. I posted it on facebook and the school site. I got some feedback from others which I thought was great. I posted it also on behance, which quite a few people actually looked at. Hopefully many of them had a rethink about the problem of debt that designers are responsible of.

In your impressionable campaign the two points that drives your idea home is firstly point 2. Find the difference between need and desire; and point 5. Be a part of change and help create the future. It is these fundamental points that should be the foundation and outcome of what you desire to achieve. I very much agree with you in what you say "… as designers we are responsible for what we make. The best designers are the ones who think differently and find new ways of solving problems." So I expect to see different approaches in your designs. Although your visuals are very appealing you are limiting yourself for having a more creative approach. I feel you can take this to a different level. Your work is not done yet infact it just started - and you promise much.

Just me working on the project, which I actually loved doing. I talked to other designers and students to see what they thought about the subject. Many where interested and had thought to some extent about it, but most people it hadn't crossed their minds. I learnt a lot by creating this piece, and it will have a big effect for my future work.
