Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

Debt is a fact of life that affects all but a lucky few. In answering this brief, I chose to portray debt as a game, something that we begin playing at a young age before growing up and discovering the reality of this thing that once seemed so trivial. The “Domino effect” that comes as a result of debt can be never ending. Being unable to pay just one debt can result in falling behind on many and so the dominoes keep falling; Hence, the creation of this game.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I decided to communicate my view of debt in a commercial, consumerist way by creating a visual merchandising poster and game. A 1950s theme has been adopted in the styling of both the game and promotional poster. This has literally been used to represent debt in a different time. Sweeping the flaws of life under a rug to maintain a certain standing in society, reminiscent of the typical “50s housewife”, Debt is often treated in the same fashion. The game is simply a guise, covering up the actual issue of Debt; there is always something we don’t see on the surface.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

My communication highlights the fact that debt is a unavoidable part of life; A thing that we are aware of, although not directly, from a very young age. My communication benefits society by making it outwardly aware of debt.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

Creating this piece really made me aware of debt and the horrible effect that it can have on a life. Being a student, I know all too well about not having money and still being surrounded by the consumerist world we live in. Debt is not avoidable, but it is manageable.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

My work is good communication work because it is not only visually pleasing, but it deals with concepts completely surrounding the theme of debt. For example, The real 1950s board game brand “Ideal” has ironically been used to compliment the game and the concept of debt behind it. While it seems ideal to go into debt, it can often result in a loss of power and stability. Further highlighting the hidden aspects of Debt that we are not always aware of.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

My work would be implemented in the place where debt is often created - a shopping centre. The work mocks the very institute that creates debt, hence making consumerists more aware.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)
