I came back from fantastic colombia few days ago.
Together with my amigos Claudia Jurado and Fernando Cuevas I have conducted a FOOD DEMOCRACY workshop at Universidad Caldas for students and participants of the Festival de la Imagen. Really great.

Along with my academic lectures I also had the opportunity to introduce Memefest at several other occasions at the University Andina in Perreira and Central University in Bogota. All institutions showed great interest to collaborate in the future. Uni Caldas and Andina are already working with their students on FOOD DEMOCRACY. What Iam also really happy about is that - as it seems- Memefest's local Colombian node is re-established. There will be a small team working on Memefest locally. Fantastic news!:)

Taking back control of cooking may be the single most important step anyone can take to help make the food system healthier and more sustainable claims Michael Pollan in his latest book "Cooked". Here you can listen to him speaking about in a NPR interview: http://www.npr.org/2013/05/03/180824408/michael-pollan-you-are-what-you-cook

very interesting talk, Im not sure im ready to try fermenting yet, a bit nervous, i like the idea though, more research required on the techniques, a great way to preserve excess produce, thanks

UN urges people to eat insects to fight world hunger

Wasps, beetles and other insects are currently "underutilised" as food for people and livestock, the report says. Insect farming is "one of the many ways to address food and feed security".

"Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly, and they have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint," according to the report.

Thomas Herndon, a student found serious flaws in the paper "Growth in the times of Debt" the massively influential study by two Harvard professors named Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff.
The study is the theoretical foundation of Austerity politics. The original paper is wrong, so is austerity.

This years Memefest theme FOOD DEMOCRACY fascinates me more and more. And iam paying even more attention to food. Although I always was highly interested in it, but not in this various ways as iam now aware of many more things while studying the topic.

Iam more and more convinced that home cooking is one of the most powerful acts of resisting the corporate food culture. Not only home cooking can have an emancipatory dimension but cooking is also one of the highest art forms.

I asked my students, here in Brisbane- how many are cooking and how many enjoy it- a bit less than two thirds of the class. That is encouraging and good, especially as they are students...

Since beginning the Food Democracy topic for Memefest I too have found that I think about food a lot more, Cooking more and buying less ready made ingredients. The thought of buying fast food now seems very evil and even shopping at the large supermarkets is harder, I think I will have to make the change to smaller green grocers and hope that I can get more conscious food there.

Iam just reading Bernard Stiegler- this I think is good in relation to my post but also what you Jenna are saying:

"From the moment when marketing develops – first in the United States, then throughout the whole world – and particularly from the moment when marketing invents the service society, the service economy, we see how the consumer is himself deprived of his savoir
vivre. The producer was deprived of his skills or abilities (savoir faire); the consumer is deprived of his savoir vivre. What does savoir vivre mean? To know how to cook, drive one’s car, know how to orient yourself
in a landscape without having a GPS system, know how to bring up your children, to knit, to bake your bread, etc."

I was just reading these comments and thought I would elaborate on how true your quote has become Oliver. Not only is it popularly unethical to buy premade ingredients, fast food or shop at the larger supermarkets like Coles, Woolworths and Aldi's, but it looks as though even smaller grocers - even so called 'farmers markets' are guilty of just as much information manipulation as their more corporate cousins. What can we do, when the system is sooo corrupt that we can't even purchase food ethically.

Ok, it is easy to dismiss this as "clicktivism" but if it has a bit of a impact- and the numbers show it can have more than that, its worth doing it. Avaaz's petition against Monstantos plans to buy up mother earth! Almost 1,5 mio signatures so far.
