An exploration of gender roles in traditional and commoly used fonts. Exploration only using form of letters and fonts as well as form of human body. Attempt to break traditional gender roles in the font by using an androgenous model whose gender may not be easily determined. Open for interpretation and discussion about feminity and masculinity and the roles of gender in society.

Feedback on this project welcome - still working out details in the concept before I execute.
interesting idea
i'd never thought about genders in type fonts
Thanks, I think its interesting as well because its not something we consciously consider. Its something we just accept as designers, that some fonts are feminine and some are masculine and their uses are based around that gender distinction. So I am trying to consider the best way to approach this project to make us consider this deeply ingrained acceptance of typographic gender roles, and bring attention to them and question them. Any input?
Thanks for the comment, appreciate it. I've actually had this concept approved for a gallery exhibition in my city this March, so pictures to come! The ball is rolling.
Hi. I'm conducting quantitative research on gender and type and I'm presenting a poster. May I use your two photos here (well done by the way) in my presentation with proper attribution? Thanks! Sarah (sb@sarahbethhopton.com)
Hi there, yes absolutely. Which ones would you like to use? Feel free to send me an email if you need high res files or any supplementary information. skndugan@gmail.com
As the engines of visibility and big data create the current enclosure condition-the question of gender, of queerness, of out-sider shapes will and is important to disturb . Even the letter as sign has to be re-shaped.
I love the idea and the findings. Have you try projecting the letter on the bodies and then photograph the result. I think that could add to the idea of shape and gender. Just a thought

How does project benefit the client (if there is a client)?
No specific client, opens up discussion on gender roles in society and gender roles in commercial font use.
How does project benefit the people you are speaking to with your communication?
Opens up an unbiased discussion on an interesting topic, creates a ciritcal examination of the design practice and gender roles in typography.
How does project benefit the wider society?
Allows us to question how deeply gender roles are rooted, by exploring them within commonly used fonts. Possibly opens the door for new typographic exploration in the future of design.
How did/does this project benefit author (authors/makers of the project)?
Creates a strong explorative conceptual piece using two practices common in my field.
Tell us something about your view on communication. What is your / your organisation's / initiative's (visual) communication philosophy?
Visual communication is an extremely powerful tool that can be used to change things positively or negatively as it holds a great influence on a mass amount of viewers.
What about the process of creating this work? Please describe it.
Work will be created through roughs, make-up and font exploration and finally through documentation in the form of photography.
Anything else you would like to say about this work?
There will be no intention to place any opinions in work, only researched roles of gender, as well as exploration of the relationship between font and gender, with the underlying attempt to question this through the use of an androgenous undefined-sex model.
