About work
Abstract
When is work work? In February 2014, Kirsty Hulm invited Katherine Riley to take part in an exhibition she was curating. Katherine was unable to physically attend as she was overseas. They began an e-mail discussion that circled around representation, physicality, use-value and perception. This conversation came to be considered a possible form of ‘work.’ The written text presented here evolved over a number of months, with all the limitations and possibilities this poses. It has been de-constructed, toyed with and manipulated by both artists in response to the theme of the Anarchival Impulse. Both artists are interested in manipulating systems of organisation in text to explore the power and meaninglessness of claims to authorship. The artists have still never met or verbally spoken. The artists have still never met or heard each other’s voices. The artists have still never met or conversed in real time. The artists have still never met or conversed verbally.
