Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

The series itself is a concept that explores three different interpretations of ‘Dialogue is failing, between you and I’. The general ‘you’ and the general ‘I’ have the potential to mean many things – between you and I, between him and her, between them and us, between strangers and strangers. I wanted the interpretation of the message to affect people in ways in which they could understand – whether they felt more likely to have a social response to the first, second, or third static piece was a choice they would make within their own subconscious mind. I would hope that the message behind the designs would shine through in each piece regardless of the way it has been portrayed and displayed. Dialogue is failing. If we don’t get the message through to the public and if we don’t get people talking, we could lose a lot of who we are as cultures, as nations, as a population, and as humans.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

The initial intention of the communication design brief was to approach the response in a static and printed way. The three pieces are a series of printed posters, all with a focus on the idea that ‘Dialogue is failing between you and I’. With the potential to be dispersed rather easily and frequently, I found the poster to be the most effective way to send my dialogic message. I intend to represent this concept through typography and use of colour.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

The public should see these designs in way that make their minds delve into another place, and think about the dialogue of our times in a more in depth way. We as people need to talk to each other – it’s a basic animal instinct. Yet in this day and age, it can be believed that dialogue is failing, and in some instances fading. We come into contact with thousands upon thousands of people in our lifetimes, however, how many of them do we speak to? How many of them do we know? How many of them have been had an impact on our lives, and how many have we impacted ourselves? These are questions that came to mind when the topic of dialogue and intimacy was brought to attention.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

This brief, personally, made me more aware of the people around me. It taught me to talk with others, not just TO or AT others. Have conversations. Make people smile. Have an impact on someone’s day who before a precise moment in that very day I had never even known existed. It made me feel the want and the need to reach out through the communicative pieces to people, strangers, around me and allow them to see what I see – learn what I have recently learnt.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

I believe the pieces are effective as advertising as they would make people think and perhaps even discuss the idea that has been presented to them. They may be influenced by the print media and feel obliged to go about their day differently, maybe even talk to some people on the street on at work or at their local supermarket.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

The series would not be in the public eye as a series as such – each piece will stand in it’s own way with the message being an intangible link within the campaign. These communication design prints would receive the most response and perhaps create the most conversations in public sphere locations where people seem to congregate – however large or small these congregations may be. Areas such as near pedestrian crossings, at the point of sale points at supermarkets and retail stores, and on the interior walls of public transport systems. The poster series also has the potential to be converted to the size of a flier or a promotional card which could be passed around to people on the street, or bundled up and placed in cafes, schools, galleries and other easily accessible public spaces.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

The main effect that the series has the potential of making would be to get the media talking - being a positive response to the campaign nonetheless. It could create discussions, be the reason for certain happenings, and instil a sense of intimacy between people. That would be the goal.
